A meeting of the LaFollette High School reunion planning committees was held on February 28 at the First Presbyterian Church of LaFollette. Board members present were Gail Herrin, President; John Lovegrove, Vice President; Sue Troutman, Secretary; and L.C. Madron, Historian. Representatives of graduating classes 1977 and 1978 at Campbell County Comprehensive High School also joined the group because they had also attended LaFollette High School before it closed in 1975. Also attending were representatives of LaFollette Colored School. They had expressed a desire to be a part of the LHS reunion since their numbers are so few and they have become so scattered . This will give them an opportunity to return “home” for the memories and to renew old friendships.
Gail went over the reunion plans which continue to evolve. Time is marching on and the work to be done is staggering but “ doable” as past reunion leaders well know. We are more grateful every meeting for the foundation they laid for us and for the leadership they have provided.
L.C. Madron, golf tournament chairman, provided the following details. The tournament will be held on Thursday June 3, 2010 at the LaFollette Country Club. Those desiring to participate should let a member of the committee know if at all possible, 2 weeks prior to June 3. The fee is $50.00 with $25 of the fifty going for greens fees and golf cart rentals. A light lunch will be provided as well as water and soft drinks along the golf course. You may contact:
Registration will be held at the LaFollette Recreation Center from 10 A.M. until 6 P.M. and continue at the White Bridge gathering for the evening mixer. Charlie Baird is chairman of this event. Tents will be set up for each class. Each tent will have a poster board where alumni can sign in thereby making it easier to find classmates and know who is in attendance.
Food vendors will be set up for those desiring to eat on site.
The Parrott Brothers Band will perform from 7-11 P.M. followed by Lansden Hill’s fireworks show.
Charlie Baird will need lots of volunteers. We urge all alumni who can help to offer their services in getting everything ready. At the present, Campbell County is doing grading work and moving ahead with plans to build a gazebo, restrooms, a stage and put in electricity at White Bridge. Whether or not it gets done by June 3 is questionable, however, we got by without it the other two reunions and it can be done this time. We will have a wonderful time regardless!
Parade participants will convene at the corner of Central Avenue and Indiana Avenue [by Cross-Smith Funeral Home] and begin the parade through downtown to the Municipal Building at 9:30 A.M. Each class will have a banner which will be taken to the respective class tents set up in Seargeant Park where water, refreshments, and photo ops will be available. The tents in Seargeant Park, which is located across from the Municipal Building, will again serve as headquarters for each class.
Mickey Nichols, Vice Chairman of the Alumni Association, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the welcome in front of the Municipal Building beginning at 10 A.M. Mayor Mike Stanfield will give the welcome and introduce Tom Stiner, guest speaker.
Downtown food vendors will be stationed along Central Avenue which will be closed to thru traffic all day. The food vendors have been asked to remain all day so that alumni will be able to get food for the evening meal if so desired. Vendors left early at the last reunion because of the “dead spot” in the afternoon while classes were having their reunions. Craft vendors will be given the option of going or staying. Vendors will set up between 7 and 9 A.M. Susie Shaw Henson is chairing this committee.
